How to Research PPC Keywords

Figuring out the right keywords for your PPC ad campaign isn’t as hard as it seems like, but it does take some work. If you’re preparing for a PPC campaign and don’t have any experience with one before, here are a few tips that will help you find the right terms and phrases to use to bring in more customers.

Make a List of Potential Keywords

The first thing to do is make a list of keywords that relate to your business, your products/services, and your audience. What would someone type into a search engine if they were looking for you? You want to cover everything from the generic to the specific on this list. For example, if you’re a florist, your potential keywords can range from “flowers” to “roses” and “wedding bouquets.” It may help to create categories and then come up with keywords for each category.

Also, don’t forget your brand. Your keywords should include your company name. If you sell branded items, you may want to consider using some of those brands in your keywords. For example, a business that sells camping equipment may want to include “YETI coolers” as a keyword if they sell that brand.

What Does Your Audience Care About?

Now it’s time to start narrowing down your list. What does your audience care about? In some cases, they may not care about your particular brand name. For example, most people search for florists in a certain location rather than for a specific flower shop. Likewise, some audiences may not necessarily be looking for brand names. With this in mind, you can remove some of the keywords that don’t seem to be a good fit with your customers.

Don’t forget to consider events or extras as well as products and services. For example, free shipping or sales may also be useful, especially if your campaign is connected to a holiday. For a florist preparing for Mother’s Day, for example, keywords like “Mother’s Day special” and “flowers for mom” can be more important than they would be at other times of the year.
