How Does CRO Differ from SEO?

Many people have heard the term SEO, which stands for Search Engine Optimization. However, not as many people are as familiar with CRO or Conversion Rate Optimization. Both are important aspects of marketing your website and measuring its return on your investment. How do SEO and CRO differ, though, and which one is more important?

SEO and CRO Defined

SEO is defined as using keywords and other methods of getting your website to rank in search engine results. These results are considered organic because they occur naturally as users search online and find your website.

CRO, on the other hand, has to do with converting those visitors into customers. It focuses on using marketing, sales, and other methods to get potential customers to take a specific action. In short, SEO gets people to your website, while CRO is focused on getting them to buy something or engage your services.

You Need Both

Because they have different goals, you can’t necessarily compare SEO and CRO or say that one is better. To truly succeed with your online endeavors, you need both. If you have prioritized outstanding SEO, then you’re going to get a lot of traffic to your website. However, this traffic does you no good if all you’re doing is getting visitors to your site. They’re not buying anything, so you’re only accomplishing half of your goal.

On the other hand, if you prioritize CRO, you may find that while many of your visitors do convert to customers, there aren’t many people coming to your website. If you’re only getting five visitors a day, a 100% conversion rate doesn’t do much to help you reach your financial goals.

User Intent Drives Both

Fortunately, good content that is driven by user intent often achieves the goals of both SEO and CRO. By looking at user intent, you can determine why people would want to visit your website and, once there, what they will want to do. This will help you determine what keywords and other information you need on the SEO side of things and what actions your CRO content needs to persuade your visitors to take.
