The Elements of a Great Call to Action

A great call to action will encourage visitors to your website to follow through with the action you’ve been guiding them towards. This could be making a purchase, downloading an eBook, or even simply joining your mailing list. If you don’t have a strong call to action, though, it’s likely that your visitors will simply leave the webpage, lowering your conversion rate and even potentially losing money to a competitor. If you haven’t been seeing the conversion rates you want, your call may be missing one of these important elements.

Your Call to Action is Clearly a Call to Action

Someone should be able to skim your webpage and pick out the call to action easily. If they can’t, it’s not clear enough. Often, the call to action is the last thing on the page, and it’s set off by itself. You may even put it in a larger font or a different color. Whatever you do, make sure your call to action stands out and clearly tells the visitor what you want them to do.

Use a Strong Verb

Your call to action should start with a strong action verb. Words such as “Click here,” “Order now,” and “Call today” are all very specific action verbs that tell your visitors specifically what to do. These words motivate visitors and removes any confusion about what action you’re asking them to take.

Add Urgency

If your call to action doesn’t feel urgent, visitors may decide that they will come back and do it later. Will they? Many of them likely won’t, which means you’ve lost those potential customers. Adding a time limit or limited quantities will give this sense of urgency that is so important. If you tell visitors that an offer will only be good for a certain amount of time or that there are only a specific number of something available, it will push them to follow your call to action. This push, commonly called FOMO or Fear Of Missing Out, is incredibly motivational.
